The city of Warsaw, located on the Vistula River, was founded in the second half of 13th century. The New Town was built in the 14th century next to the Old Town. Warsaw became the capital of Poland in 1596 when King Zygmunt III Waza moved his permanent residence from the Wawel Castle in Cracow to the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The city of Warsaw was largely destroyed during World War II and in the following decades rebuilt in the original style.
