King Louis XIII (1601-1643) built a hunting lodge in the town of Versailles in 1623.
King Louis XIV (1638-1715), also known as the Sun King, started its expansion to a large Palace in 1661.
The Palace was designed by the architect Louis Le Vau, the inside decorations were taken care by Charles Le Brun and the gardens were designed by André Le Nôtre.
In 1682 the Palace became the royal residence and the seat of the government until 1789.
