Sintra, located near Lisbon and close to the sea, has been inhabited since
prehistoric times.
During the Moorish domination it was a military site until the reconquest in 1147.
The National Palace was used as a summer residence for the kings until the 17th century.
The Pena National Palace was built in 1840 on the site of a former convent of Hieronymians,
destroyed during the earthquake of 1755.
