San Gimignano, a small town in Tuscany, is named to the 4th century bishop of
Modena, Saint Geminianus.
Located on the pilgrimage route to Rome on the Via Francigena, the small village expanded and
became a free town in 1199.
In 1353 the city came under control of Florence, loosing its political autonomy.
The town preserves its medieval character, including the high towers built by the wealthy and
powerful families, of which, from around 72 towers built in medieval times, around 14 still
survive.
