The church and the adjacent Dominican monastery were constructed between 1463
and 1490 in Lombard Gothic style by Guiniforte Solari, on a location where a chapel with a fresco
of the Virgin, called Madonna delle Grazie, existed.
Between 1492 and 1497 the site was enlarged and the apse of the church reconstructed by the
Renaissance architect Donato Bramante.
The north wall of the monastery's refectory (dining hall) contains the fresco "The Last Supper",
painted by Leonardo da Vinci between 1495 and 1497.
