The Arsenal of Rochefort was founded by King Louis XIV in 1666, on the advice of his minister Colbert.
Located on the bank of the Charente River and not far from the Atlantic Ocean, it was a place of shipbuilding and repair, and was in operation until 1927.
The city next to the Arsenal was built according to a rectangular grid pattern.
