Meknes, together with Fez, Rabat and Marrakesh, is one of the four
Imperial cities of Morocco. The Alawite (Sharifian) sultan Moulay Ismail made Meknes the capital
in 1675. City walls were constructed with monumental gates, as well as great monuments like
the Royal Palace (Dar El Makhzen), the Great Mosque and the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum.
In 1728 the capital was moved to Marrakesh.
