Marrakesh, together with Fez, Rabat and Meknes, is one of the four
Imperial cities of Morocco, and was founded in 1062 as the capital by the Almoravids.
In 1269 the Merenides took the city and transferred the capital to Fez, but it became
the capital again in 1522. In 1675 Meknes became the capital until 1728, when it was
moved back to Marrakesh. The most important monuments are the Koutoubia mosque, the
Ben Youssef Madrassa, the Saadian Dynasty tombs, the Al Badi Palace (16th century).
