The city of Le Havre, founded in 1517 by King Francois I and
located on the English Channel in Normandy at the mouth of the River Seine, was
almost entirely destroyed during World War II.
The city center was rebuilt during twenty years, between 1945 and 1964, according
to the plan and design of the modernist architect Auguste Perret (1874-1954) and
his team.
The reconstructed area is homogeneous in design, with use of reinforced concrete and
modern prefabrication techniques.
