New Lanark was built around 1785 and used the Falls of Clyde as a source of power
for the cotton mills. Robert Owen managed the cotton mills as from 1800 and made them more efficient
by a implementing a strict but fair regime. He then gradually introduced his Utopian social experiment,
by phasing out the employment of young children, providing decent homes to the workers, fair wages,
free health care and a new education system, as well as introducing the first nursery in the world.
