Since the Middle Ages up to the present day, there have been hydraulic works in the Netherlands for the drainage of land to be used for agriculture and settlement. The windmills at Kinderdijk-Elshout were constructed in 1738 and 1740 and used to drain the excess water from the land into the nearby rivers.
