The city of Kamakura, located about 50 km south west of Tokyo, became in 1192 the
political center of Japan when shogun Minamoto Yoritomo established the new government in the city.
The Kamakura government, first under the Minamoto shogun and then under the Hojo regents,
declined in 1333 when the emperor Go-Daigo was able to restore imperial power in Kyoto which then
became the political center under the Ashikaga shogunate (Muromachi Period).
