The Hallstatt-Dachstein region is part of the Salzkammergut in the Eastern Alps.
The Dachstein mountain is 2996 meters high and located in a glaciated area.
The city of Hallstatt is linked to salt mining, and its name is derived from the Celtic word
Hal, meaning salt (Salz in German).
The first salt mining in the area dates back to 5.000 BC, with its first heyday in the middle
Bronze Age around 1.200 BC.
