The Cistercian abbey of Fontenay was founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard. It consists of a church, chapter house, dormitory, cloister, scriptorium, calefactory (heating room), bakery, infirmary and forge. The church was consecrated by Pope Eugène III in 1147. At the forge, iron was produced from nearby ore using hydraulic hammer and bellows using energy from the close by waterfall. The monastery was dissolved in 1790 and became a paper-mill, which operated until 1906.
