The Fagus company was founded by Carl Benscheidt (1858-1947), who commissioned in 1911 the architect Walter Gropius (1883-1969) to build a new shoe last factory at Alfeld-an-der-Leine.
The building was the first modernist industrial building, using glass facades and without any support on the corners.
