Drottningholm, Stockholm, Sweden

The Royal Domain of Drottingholm ("Queen's Island"), located in a suburb of Stockholm, consists of the Palace, French Baroque and English garden, the Theatre and the Chinese Pavilion. The Palace was built by the Queen dowager Hedvig Eleonora, after a fire destroyed an earlier 16th century palace on the same place. The Theatre, built in 1766, with its sophisticated stage machinery enabling quick scene changes with the curtain up, was mainly used between 1777 and 1792 during King Gustav III; reopened in 1922, it is still in use today. The Chinese Pavilion has an exotic character with many Chinese elements. The Palace is currently the residence of the royal family.
