The Abbey of Corvey, lying on the River Weser, was founded in the 9th century with the support of Emperor Louis the Pious (Ludwig der Fromme) as a Benedictine monastery with monks coming from Corbie in Northern France.
The Abbey became an important center of culture until it started to decline in the late Middle Ages.
During the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) the abbey was severely damaged. The west end of the church, built in 885, survived, and the remaining of the church was rebuilt in Baroque style. In 1803 the abbey was secularized and finally dissolved.
