The Cordouan Lighthouse, or Phare de Cordouan, located on an island at the estuary of the Gironde River, was designed by the architect Louis de Foix and built in the 16th century. It was first lighthouse to use the Fresnel lens, in 1823, and is the oldest lighthouse in France still in operation.
