The Buddhist temple of Bulguksa, located near the city of Gyeongju, former capital during the Silla Kingdom (57 BC - 935 AD), was completed in 774 on the site of a former temple built in 528.
The temple has two pagodas, Seokgatap and Dabotap, several halls, with the main hall Daeungjeon housing the Shakyamuni Buddha.
Seokguram Grotto, also completed in 774, contains the sculpture of Buddha, 3.45 m high, in the Bhumisparsha Mudra position and looking towards the sea.
