Budapest was formed by two contrasting cities, the hilly Buda on the western bank
of the Danube River, with the Buda Castle and Óbuda (Ancient Buda), and the flat Pest on the
eastern bank. In 1849 the first bridge, the Chain Bridge, joining the two cities, was built, and
in 1872 Buda and Pest formed Budapest as the new capital city of Hungary.
