Bamberg, Germany

The old city of Bamberg is built on seven hills, like ancient Rome although many centuries later. Emperor Heinrich II (973-1024) lived in Bamberg with his wife Kunigunde, where he founded the Bishopric and built the Imperial Cathedral, making the city, for a short period of time, the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. In the following centuries Bamberg was the seat of a powerful Prince-Bishopric. Bamberg was shaped in the early 18th century, making it the baroque city of today, and in the late 18th century it was a center of Enlightenment for southern Germany. In 1802 the city was secularised and became part of Bavaria.
