Malta was ruled by the Phoenicians (around 1.000 BC), Greeks, Carthaginians,
Romans (until 395), Byzantines (until 870), Arabs (until 1090), and the Order of the Knights
of St John (until 1798). The Order of the Knights arrived in Malta in 1530, after being granted
the islands by Emperor Charles V.
The city of Valetta was founded by the Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette in 1566, and became
the capital of Malta.
The city is completely surrounded by fortifications, and is laid out in a grid pattern of streets.
