Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour (1160-1199), after building the mosque La Koutoubia in
Marrakesh, intended to built in Rabat the largest mosque and minaret in the Muslim world.
Construction started in 1195, and with the death of the sultan in 1199 construction work was stopped.
The minaret Tour Hassan, or Hassan Tower, raises 44 meters (140 feet) instead of the intended
86 meters (260 feet) and of the incomplete mosque 200 columns remain.
