The Medici family of Florence became economically powerful through banking in the
14th century and ruled over the city of Florence between 1434 and 1737.
Pope Leo X, Pope Clement VII and Pope Leo XI came from the Medici family, as well as Catherine de
Medici, wife of King Henry II of France, and Marie de Medici, second wife of King Henry IV of France.
The Medici Villas were residences outside the city of Florence, ancient castles acquired by
the family, which were rebuilt and enlarged as magnificent villas and surrounded by large gardens.
