The city of Kyoto was founded in 794 as Heiankyo (Heian Capital), in the Heian
period, as the imperial capital of Japan, and later renamed to Kyoto (Capital City).
The city was laid out in a grid pattern according to Chinese city planning system, and has many
historic wooden monuments, in particular Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, as well as
traditional Japanese gardens.
In 1868, during the Meiji Restoration, the capital was officially transferred to Tokyo.
