The Pennsylvania State House, known as Independence Hall, was built in 1753 and is the place where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were created.
In 1774 the First Continental Congress took place with representatives from the 13 original British colonies. The Second Continental Congress took place from 1775 until 1789.
On 4th of July 1776 the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson and revised by Benjamin Franklin, was approved by the Congress after several modifications.
In 1787 the Constitution of the United States was signed and ratified by the states of the Confederation.
George Washington was elected as the first president of the United States in 1789 and Philadelphia became the capital. In 1800 the capital moved from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.
