Fez, together with Marrakesh, Rabat and Meknes, is one of the four Imperial cities of Morocco, and was founded in 789 by Idriss I. The city became the capital in 809 under Idriss II. In 859 the Kairaouine University was founded. The capital moved to Marrakesh in 1062, under the Almoravids, but in 1269, under the Merinides, the capital moved back to Fez. A new part of the city was built in 1276, Fez el Djedid (New Fez), beside the old part of Fez el Bali (Fez the Old). The city flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries, and many great buildings were constructed during that period, in particular madrassas (Koranic schools), fondouks (merchant lodging houses), palaces and mosques.
